LYNDON — Humboldt High’s track and field team had plenty of highlights to open the season Friday at Lyndon.
Best of all, the Cub athletes show room for improvement, head coach Eric Carlson said.
“I was pleased with our kids’ efforts,” he said. “We had a few personal records and a few standout performances, but I was most pleased with our competitiveness.”
The Cub athletes took time to hear Carlson’s advice before unloading off the team bus.
“I told the kids to stay warm, compete and most of all have fun.”
Because Humboldt’s focus in the early going is more conditioning rather than technique, Carlson is optimistic times and marks will improve as the season progresses.
“We have not worked much on field events, hurdles or relays,” he explained. “Instead, we have been sprinting as fast as possible with full rest, and only for short distances. This philosophy will pay off later in the season as we stay fresh and develop our fitness.”
Leading the way were some familiar names, including Drew Wilhite, who claimed gold in the 800-meter run at 2 minutes, 12 seconds, third in the 1600-meter run at 4:56, and sixth in the 3200-meter run at 11:56.
Meanwhile, Colton Johnson took silver with personal-best numbers in both the long jump (19 feet, 9.75 inches) and the high jump (6’2”).
Maddox Johnson, meanwhile, took home third in both the discus and javelin, Levi McGowen took second in the triple jump, third in the 400-meter dash and fifth in the 100-meter dash.
Mateo Miller nabbed fourth in both hurdles races.
Drew Counsil, Gavin Jaro, Aden Kelley and McGowen teamed to take third in the 4×100-meter dash, running 47.49 seconds.
The Cub boys took third out of 15 teams.
On the girls’ side, Humboldt’s 4×800-meter relay team of Carsyn Haviland, Assya Goforth, Anna Heisler and McKenna Jones teamed to take gold, finishing in 11:52.
Jones shined in distance races, taking third in the 3200 and fourth in the 1600. Anna Goforth finished third in the javelin and eighth in the shot put.
The Lady Cubs took eighth overall.
