HUMBOLDT — Humboldt swept Cherryvale Tuesday thanks to stellar pitching.

Trey Sommer and Logan Page took the mound for their respective starts and marked the third straight no-hitter. The Cubs earned run-rule victories of 13-0 and 16-0.

Game one

Once the scoring train left the station it didn’t stop for Humboldt. The Cubs scored two runs in the first inning, six more in the second, three in the third and two more in the fourth.

Sommer threw five innings of no-hit baseball while striking out 12 Chargers.

Sommer also drove in a team-high four runs while Blake Ellis and Colden Cook each plated three runs. Hull had a team-high three hits while Ellis, Sommer and Cook each had two hits. Hull also scored a team-high four runs while Sommer scored three.

Page and Ellis also each scored two runs.

“I loved our approach at the plate tonight,” said Humboldt head coach Mike Miller. “We were much more disciplined in our approach and that led to better swings from us.”

Cherryvale’s Peyton Modich started on the mound and worked two innings, allowing eight runs on eight hits. He also struck out two Cubs and walked one.

Game two

Humboldt kept bringing their best approaches to the plate in game two and unloaded for a 12-run second inning en route to a 16-0 lopsided win.

Page drove in a team-high four runs while Mason Sterling, Cole Mathes and Hull each knocked in two. Jacob Harrington and Page also had a team-high two hits. The Cubs put together nine hits and six walks. Cherryvale was hitless but had three walks.

Page, a sophomore, was brilliant on the mound. In only three innings he didn’t allow any hits, struck out six and walked three.

“Trey and Logan were both outstanding in their starts,” Miller added. “This was actually our third straight game without allowing a hit since the two of them combined for a no-hitter last week against Neodesha.”

Leuie Umbarger started on the mound for Cherryvale and served up 11 runs on six hits in 1.1 innings. He also walked four Cubs and struck out one.
