Iola and some of Humboldt’s younger wrestlers traveled to Fredonia on Saturday.

The Mustangs came away with four top-six finishes while the Cubs struggled against varsity level competition, only getting one placer.

Iola was led by two third-place finishes from 285-pound sophomore Logan Brown and 145-pound freshman Trent Jones. Both scored 20 team points.

Brown started with a bye followed by a 1:44 pin of Winfield’s Isaiah Anderson-Lolar before falling to Campus’ Jacob Beehler who pinned Brown in 3:09 in the semifinals.

Brown bounced back with a quick 36-second pin of Humboldt’s Andrew Watts before Nickerson’s Matteiu Cedillo forfeited the third-place match.

Meanwhile, Jones began with a 3-2 decision loss to Winfield’s Parker Smith before reeling off five straight wins starting with two pins of Flinthills’ Colton Smith (23 seconds) and Shawnee Mission South’s Quinn McCalmon (1:53).

Jones then got a 9-1 major decision win over Campus’ Corbin Williams before getting a 12-0 revenge win over Parker Smith in the consolation semifinals.

In the third place match, Jones grabbed a 12-2 major decision win over Noah Caven to wrap things up.

170-pound senior Elijah Luedke finished fourth, scoring 16 points.

After starting off with a bye, Luedke got a big 5:32 pin over Parsons’ Gus Taylor.

That fight and determination continued in the semifinal round but Luedke fell on the other side after getting pinned in 4:55 seconds to Fredonia’s Buddy Claibourn.

Luedke bounced back with a 1:44 win over Leon-Bluestem’s Jonathan McAmis before falling to Nickerson’s Jarin Gomes with a 2:42 pin in the third-place match.

The last placer was 106-pound freshman T.J. Taylor who finished sixth with 11 team points.

Taylor started off with a 27-second pin of Winfield’s Gunther Flower before falling by 2-1 decision over Southeast’s Bryer Glaser.

Taylor came back and got wins over Parsons’ Chris Smith (59-second pin) and Erie’s Drayton Kennedy (4-0 decision) before falling in a 1:31 pin to Campus’ Dylan Sheler in the consolation semifinals.

Taylor forfeited his final match in the fifth-place match versus Perry-Locompton’s Dalton Kahle.
