Saturday saw the start of the 2017 volleyball season for both Iola and Humboldt. The varsity traveled to Burlington and the junior varsity competed in the JV Iola Invitational held at Iola High School.
The Lady Cubs landed a fourth place finish while the Fillies finished sixth overall.
Humboldt opened up the meet with a 0-2 (25-10, 25-17) loss versus Wellsville while Iola earned a 2-0 (25-20, 25-17) win versus Waverly in their opening match.
The two met for the second match. The Lady Cubs beat the Fillies 2-1 (27-25, 25-12, 25-16) thanks to a narrow win in the first set for Humboldt.
The Lady Cubs got their second win of the tournametn with a 2-0 (25-23, 25-11) victory over Waverly.
Iola fell 2-0 (25-12, 25-6) in the final pool match.
In the consolation semifinals, the Fillies beat Prairie View 2-0 (28-26, 25-10) while Burlington downed Humboldt 0-2 (25-15, 25-20) in the championship semifinals.
In the third place match Wellsville beat Humboldt 2-1 (17-25, 25-17, 12-25) and in the fifth place match, Iola fell 2-0 (25-18, 25-19) to Waverly.
On the JV side, Iola fell in the championship game to Wellsville 2-0 (25-15, 25-16) to finish in 2nd place while Humboldt took third, beating Burlington 2-1 (25-18, 22-25, 18-16).
Humboldt varsity will head to Oswego on Sept. 5 while Iola will host a varsity invitational on Sept. 9.
