Horseshoe tourney draws a crowd

Seventeen competitors took part Saturday in the State Farm Insurance Open, a local horseshoe tournament.

Saturday’s tournament featured competitors from as far away as Topeka and Edna in Kansas and Stockton and Neosho in southern Missouri.

The competition was divided into four classes, depending on each entrant’s pitcher ringer percentages.

In Class A, those with a 40-percent ringer percentage or above, Dave Mathewson of Gas took first place. Mathewson went 6-0 on the day, hitting 144 ringers on 282 tosses, a 51.06 percentage.

Bob Outt, Neosho, was the Class B (19 percent to 39 percent) champion, going 6-0 with a 48 percent ringer rate on the day.

Kenny Riebel, LaHarpe, took the Class C crown, going 5-1 with a 20 percent ringer rating. Class C was for those who entered with a ringer rating of 19.53 percent to 29 percent.

Rick Stephens, Bronson, was the Class E champ, going 5-1 with a 23.33 percent ringer rate. Class E was reserved for those with a ringer rating of 17.5 percent or below.

Saturday’s competition was used by many participants to prepare for the World Horseshoe Championships later this month in Montgomery, Ala., Mathewson said.
