Josh Honeycutt, who just finished his junior year at Emporia State University, has his sights on the 2010 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Honeycutt is a three-time NCAA Division II national meet qualifier in the triple jump. He placed sixth at the national meet his sophomore year and was fourth at the 2010 meet in May.
“Two years ago I competed in the Junior Nationals. This year I’m going to the US Championships,” Honeycutt said. “If this was an Olympic year, this meet would be the Olympic trials.”
As with the junior nationals, Honeycutt is on his own to raise funds to finance the trip. The USA Outdoor Track and Field Championship meet is June 23-27 at Drake Stadium on the Drake University campus in Des Moines, Iowa.
ESPN will broadcast competition on June 25-26 and June 27. NBC has coverage of the event June 26-27.
Honeycutt said he needed to find sponsors or organizations and individuals willing to donate to a fund for him. He said the money would go for entry fees and defray travel and lodging expenses.

Honeycutt owns the Emporia State men’s outdoor triple jump record at 53 feet, 9 inches, which he set in 2009. He was the 2009 NCAA Division II indoor national triple jump champion.
Honeycutt is the Iola High triple jump record holder at 48’3” set in 2007. He was the Kansas Class 4A state champion in the triple jump in 2006.
