Playing their first 19 games on the road, Iola American Legion Post 15’s AA Indians were glad to finally have a four-game homestand this past week. They made the most of it with four victories.

On Thursday Iola AA swept under visiting Burlington 15-0 — in three innings — and 10-2 on the Allen Community College baseball field. The Indians improved to 21-2 on the season.

They had been scheduled to play in a tournament at Chanute this weekend but it has been canceled. They are off all next week.

Iola plays at Paola on July 10 then at home against Chanute on July 12.

The Iola AA team hammered out 12 hits in the opener against Burlington Thursday. Eight of those hits came in an 11-run second inning.

Iola used eight hits, two walks and three Burlington errors to blow the game wide open. The Indians won in three innings, 15-0.

Mason Coons checked the Burlington hitters to just two hits and issued one walk. He struck out two batters.

Jerrik Sigg was 3-for-3 with three singles. Braden Larson and Kris Collins each delivered a single and a double and Dalton Smith hit two singles. Levi Ashmore, Drew Walden and Devon Conner had a single apiece.

The AA Indians got up 2-0 in the second game when Coons hit a two-run single in the first inning. Burlington tied the game in the top of the third.

Iola responded with three runs in its half of the third. Walden had an RBI double and Corey Taylor drove in run with a single then scored on an error.

The Indians sealed the win by plating five runs in the fourth. Sigg drove in two runs on a double and Walden’s sacrifice fly brought  in a run. An error allowed a run to score then Collins had an RBI base hit.

Taylor and Ashmore each had two singles. Sigg and Walden had a double apiece. Coons, Larson and Collins had a single each.

Clint Heffern was the winning pitcher. He gave up three hits, walked one and struck out three. Iola had three errors.
