HUMBOLDT — Humboldt Middle School boys ended their 2019 basketball season with a flourish Thursday.

The A team thumped visiting Leon Bluestem, 40-21, while the B team overcame an eight-point deficit at halftime to win, 22-19.

“This group of eighth-graders worked extremely hard all year and it really started to show at the end of the season,” head coach Jeremy Weilert said. “We were down three players that have started for us at various times during the season.  Several players that didn’t see the floor as often stepped up tonight and contributed in a big way.”

The A team received a number of key contributions, led by Trey Sommer’s 14 points and five rebounds. Maddox Johnson also was key with 11 points, nine boards, seven assists and two steals. Dakota Slocum chipped in with 11 rebounds and three steals.

The A team ends the season at 4-10.

The B team started off on the wrong foot, but ended with a squeaker.

Bluestem led 11-2 after one quarter and 16-8 at the break. A 10-1 fourth-quarter run did the trick for the home team.

Sam Hull gave the Cubs the lead with a pair of free throws in the final minute. Bradley Lowry followed with two more to push the lead to three.

“I’m extremely proud of this group,” Weilert said.

Hull finished with seven points, five rebounds  and five assists. Garren Goodner had five points. Caden Vink pulled in four steals.

The B team ends the year at 8-6.
