HUMBOLDT — Not only did Humboldt Middle School’s girls basketball A-Team win the Tri-Valley League this season, they won the postseason tournament Saturday.
The Lady Cubs beat Galesburg to start off the tournament, 41-25. The team trailed 10-2 three minutes into the game.
“It took a while for the girls to wake up and get going in this one,” coach Scott Brady said. “Morgan Mauk gave us a big spark off the bench on defense and really changed the pace of the game.”
Aricah McCall led the team with 13 points and added seven steals. Winter Lohmann scored four points and grabbed eight rebounds. Alayna Johnson scored four points and had six rebounds. Mauk scored three points and had five steals. Maggie Johnson finished with 12 points and Kaylie Johnson scored five.
“We came out strong in the second half and were able to knock down a few shots,” Brady said.
In the middle game, Yates Center beat Galesburg to set up a winner-take-all final.
Humboldt won, 47-34. The team got off to a hot start, leading 13-2 after the first quarter.
“All five starters scored in the first quarter and the girls were exceptional on the defensive side of the ball,” Brady said.
McCall led the team with 15 points, stole the ball eight times and dished out five assists. Maggie Johnson followed with 10 points, had five rebounds and six steals. Kaylie Johnson scored nine points and grabbed eight boards. Lohmann scored six points, grabbed four rebounds and had four steals. Madison Gean scored four points and had a team-high 10 rebounds.
