HUMBOLDT — Humboldt Middle School found its offensive groove Thursday.
The Cub A team featured several players with season-highs in points as Humboldt jumped out quickly in both halves to defeat visiting Fredonia, 40-27.
“This was a good win for us,” HMS head coach Jeremy Weilert said.
Weston Johnson led the way with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Bryer Grisier chipped in with 11 points and five assists. Kolton Hanson scored nine. Ty Shaughnessy had four points, four steals and five assists. Bentlee Anderson also had three steals.
The win capped a perfect night for Humboldt’s three middle school teams.
The Cub B team got the early lead and never looked back in a 25-18 win.
Zane Sanchez led with 10 points, while Mason Miller had eight points and nine rebounds. Riley Lassman scored three; Tucker Wrestler and Bently Kolb notched two points each. Sanchez and Wrestler each had three steals; Lassman had three assists.
The C team made it a clean sweep with a 7-4 win over two quarters. Anderson scored four points, had six rebounds and swiped three steals. Envy Oberbeck scored two and Wrestler had one. Nathan Seibert had three steals.
Fredonia tops Lady Cubs
HUMBOLDT — Humboldt Middle School’s girls were stout defensively, Thursday, holding visiting Fredonia to the Yellowjackets’ lowest point total of the season.
Problem was, Fredonia’s defense was just a smidge better.
Humboldt was within 13-12 midway through the fourth quarter, but saw two starters leave due to fouls, allowing Fredonia to score the game’s last seven points and win, 20-12.
“We took some good shots, and had some great chances to capture the lead, but we could not get over that hurdle,” Humboldt head coach Eric Carlson said.
Bailey Daniels led Humboldt with nine points, while Jordan Hencey scored three. Addisyn Drake had three steals. Braylynn Watson added four rebounds.
Fredonia also claimed a 20-12 victory in B team play, leading 12-0 at halftime.
