The winter sports season —more specifically, basketball and wrestling — begins this week for Iola and surrounding high schools.
The activities begin Thursday when Iola High’s varsity and junior varsity wrestling teams travel to Eureka. The matches begin at 5:30 p.m.
The wrestlers then travel to Caney Saturday morning for the Caney Invitational, which begins at 9 a.m.
Iola squads tip off the 2012-13 basketball season Friday evening at Girard. The varsity girls begin play at 6 o’clock; the boys shortly after the Fillies conclude their contest.
Both varsity squads will travel to Burlington next week for games in an early season tournament. The teams play Dec. 4, 5 and 7.
Next week’s tournament originally was slated for Baldwin but was changed because of needed repairs in a middle school locker room.
Other area schools also begin their respective basketball seasons this week.
Crest High’s boys and girls, still pumped from appearing in the Class 1A State Tournament last spring, open the season at home Thursday against Southern Coffey County High.
On Friday, Humboldt High travels to Eureka. Marmaton Valley heads to Uniontown.
Allen Community College basketball teams continue their early season schedules this week.
The Red Devil women travel to Tulsa Tuesday to take on Rhema College at 5:30 p.m. before returning home Wednesday, when both the men and women will host North Central Missouri. The women’s game tips off at 6 p.m.; the men at 8.
Allen will be at home Saturday for a doubleheader, beginning with the 2 p.m. women’s game. The men tip off at 4.
