HHS athletes qualify for state in five events

RICHMOND — Four events entered and four events qualified for the state track meet.

Humboldt High junior Tanner McNutt won a 2012 Kansas Class 3A regional track championship in the 400-meter dash Friday at Central Heights High School.

McNutt, who has the fourth-fastest time in Class 3A, claimed the gold medal in 50.34 seconds. Fellow junior Nick Keazer also qualified for the 2012 Kansas High School All-Class State Track and Field Championships in the 400 meters.

Nick Keazer was third in the race in 52.12 seconds. He and McNutt teamed with junior Hayden Boring and freshman Ethan Bartlett to claim the 4×400-meter relay regional championship. The Cub foursome won the race in 3 minutes, 32.35 seconds.

McNutt also will compete in the state 3A long jump after taking second at the regional with a leap of 21’9 3/4”. McNutt placed third in the 800-meter run in 2:10.83 to advance to the state meet.

Humboldt’s Andrew Keazer placed 18th in the 800-meter run in 2:41.28. A. Keazer, N. Keazer, Bartlett and Boring combined for fifth place in the 4×800-meter relay in 9:03.57.

Layne Gonzales was 15th in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 57.69 seconds. Zack Osborn placed 20th in the discus with a throw of 100’11”.

Humboldt’s Shayli Ellis qualified for her first state track meet. The junior was fourth in the regional long jump  event with a leap of 15’ 2 1/2”.

Ellis was eighth in the 100-meter high hurdles in 17.96 seconds.

Kolbyn Allen was seventh in the 800-meter run in 2:56 and Darrah Tinkler ran 12th in the 400-meter dash in 1:19.

Tinkler finished 12th in the shot at 28’3/4” and Hunter Isaac was 18th at 21’3 3/4”. Brook Boatwright placed 12th in the discus at 86’3” and Isaac was 18th at 64’11”. Tinkler was 12th in the javelin with a distance of 92’9”.

Preliminary races for the 3A 400-meter dash and the 4×400-meter relay are Friday afternoon.

The boys’ long jump is Friday evening and the girls’ long jump is Saturday afternoon. The 800-meter final is Saturday.

The state meet is Friday and Saturday at Wichita State’s Cessna Stadium.
