After 15 years at the helm of the Allen County Community College men’s basketball program, Mike Hayes resigned as head coach. ACCC athletic director Randy Weber released the news earlier this week.
Anwar Perry, who has been Hayes’ assistant coach the past three years, has been named interim head coach for the 2010-2011 basketball season.
Tonight this will all become official when the ACCC Board of Trustees meet.
“The trustees know the situation. They just need to vote on Mike’s resignation and take action on Anwar’s appointment,” Weber said.
“The timing of Mike’s departure as basketball coach is late. Anwar has been very active in recruiting the athletes here. Anwar’s promotion was the logical choice and the least disruption to the program.”
Weber said once the season is over the college would evaluate where it is and where to go from there.
Hayes, who was Jayhawk Eastern Division coach of the year in 2003, will continue to teach business classes at ACCC. Also Hayes remains as the Red Devil golf coach.
“Mike said he had been thinking about leaving the basketball position for a while and thought the time was right for him to resign,” Weber said.
Perry helped Kentucky Wesleyan College in Owensboro, Ky. win NCAA Division II national championships in 1999 and 2001. Perry and a teammate have their uniforms hanging in the NCAA hall of fame because they are the only two players that have played in four consecutive NCAA Division II championship games.
After graduating from KWC he worked as an assistant coach at his hometown high school in Lewisville, Texas. He also worked in the business world before taking the ACCC assistant’s job.
