It was a decision with a lot of thought behind it, according to Mike Hayes.
Hayes stepped down as head men’s basketball coach at Allen County Community College last week. Hayes spent the last 15 years of his 25 years of basketball coaching at ACCC.
“It wasn’t an easy decision but one I had been thinking about for a while,” Hayes told the Register late last week.
“I love coaching and the association with the players. I take a lot of pride in maintaining a competitive program. I just felt it was getting harder to recharge myself.”
The past nine years Hayes’ Red Devil teams were 141-138 overall. According to NJCAA records, Hayes recorded 410 wins and 377 losses in his 25 years of junior college basketball coaching.
“I felt it was best to focus on two rather than three things. I’ll still teach accounting, intro to business and some computer courses plus coach the golf team,” Hayes said.
“I’m excited for Anwar (Perry). I’m sure he’ll do a fine job. I’ve enjoyed it all here at ACCC, coaching in the Jayhawk Conference and working with the community and the administration.”
Hayes coached at Jefferson College, Hillsboro, Mo., then Highland Community College in Kansas and Moberly (Mo.) Community College before coming to ACCC.
Anwar Perry, Hayes’ assistant for three years, was named interim head coach.
