FREDONIA — Humboldt High’s starters got off two offensive snaps after halftime Friday.

On the Cubs’ first play from scrimmage of the third quarter, tailback isaiah Coronado outran host Fredonia’s defense 45 yards for a touchdown, extending what already was a healthy Humboldt lead to 42-12.

Then, on Humboldt’s next possession, all-everything quarterback Conor Haviland put the finishing touches on another memorable night, blasting his way for an 83-yard touchdown.

By then, Cub head coach Logan Wyrick had seen enough. He substituted liberally the rest of the way in the Cubs’ 50-18 whitewash, pushing Humboldt’s record to 2-0 on the young 2019 season.

The Cubs will look to keep their record spotless next Friday, in an unusual venue. Humboldt takes on Eureka, but will do so in Iola’s Riverside Park because Eureka is still rebuilding its football facilities from a 2018 tornado.

But first, there’s plenty of time to reflect on Humboldt’s offensive outburst.

Unofficially, the Cubs racked up 348 yards rushing, 240 from Haviland on an abbreviated night, and another 100 for Coronado.

Haviland scored on runs of 55, 62, 14 and 83 yards. He also completed a 17-yard scoring strike to Coronado early in the second quarter, to break open what had been a 14-12 Humboldt lead.

Haviland wound up with 45 passing yards. Coronado had 42 yards on three receptions and a score. His second rushing touchdown of the game covered 5 yards as well.

Meanwhile, Humboldt’s defense settled in nicely to shut down the Yellowjacket offense in quarters 2-4.

Fredonia’s final score came on the last play of the game against Humboldt’s reserve defenders. The Cubs were flagged for pass interference as the clock hit :00, allowing the Yellowjackets one untimed play to finish the game. The subsequent 1-yard touchdown put the final margin at 32.

“We’re getting there,” Cub head coach Logan Wyrick said. He credited his defense’s performance, but noted Humboldt has plenty to work on before next week’s matchup with the Tornadoes.
