State wrestling ended in a snowstorm and no individual placers for area teams on Saturday in Hays and Salina.

At the 3-2-1A State tournament, Humboldt senior Dagen Goodner went into his first match of the day hopeful that he could surpass his previous years’ results and advance on further through the consolation bracket.

Goodner went 1-1 on Friday but a match-up versus Beloit senior River Paul who came into the match with a 34-11 record proved to be too much.

Goodner was pinned in 3:53, ending his season and the wrestling season for the Cubs who came into the year with high aspirations for the year but due to some bad luck and circumstances out of their control, ended their year with just one state win as a team.

Meanwhile at 4A State in Salina, Iola freshman Trent Jones had a similar showing but while Goodner’s performance marked the end of his high school wrestling career, for Jones it was only the beginning.

After going 1-1 in the first day of the tournament, Jones matched up with Buhler senior Nick Elliott who was 40-10 heading into the match.

Jones put up a good fight but the senior, who ended up going on to place third overall, won 12-5.

Jones, along with the other Iola freshmen and sophomores will be back next season as their program continues to build while Humboldt, for the first time in program history, will have to look toward their youth for a return trip to state in the 2019-20 season.
