The third annual Hal Wray Memorial Golf Tournament is July 9 at Iola’s Cedarbrook Golf Course.
Actually, it is the fourth year for the golf tournament sponsored by the Sons of American Legion (SAL) Post 15 of Iola. Four years ago the late Hal Wray put together a golf tournament as a fundraising event for the SAL.
Over the years, proceeds from the tournament have benefited non-profit programs in Allen County. SAL Commander Garry Brand said groups such as Hope Unlimited, hospice care and Special Olympics have been given funds.
The 2011 golf tournament’s proceeds go to establishing the Hal Wray Memorial Scholarship.
“Hal started this four years ago, then passed away three years ago from cancer. He did a lot of work out here at Cedarbrook,” Brand said. “We thought starting a scholarship for high school seniors would be a great tribute to Hal and help Allen County students further their education.”
The Wray memorial tournament is July 9 and is open to the first 20 teams that enter. It is a best-ball scramble format for four-person teams.
Entry fee is $40 per person or $160 per team. Flights and prizes will be determined by number of entries.
Brand said community businesses and individuals have donated prizes, money and time to organize the tournament. Doug Taylor has donated $10,000 for a hole-in-one contest.
The Square B 4-H Club will have concessions for the tournament.
“We encourage area golfers to compete and help us make this a successful event,” Brand said.
