RICHMOND — Matt Percy’s decorated high school golf career, capped with a 10th place medal at the Class 3A State Tournament in May, is the latest opportunity to bond with his grandfather.
Percy, completing his sophomore year at Central Heights High School, finished the season by winning a three-way playoff for 10th at the 3A state tournament in Cheney.
Shortly after finishing his round, Percy called his grandfather, Iolan Glenn Percy, a family tradition, the Osawatomie Graphic reported.
“He taught me everything I know,” Percy told the newspaper. “He taught me the fundamentals. If I ever had a problem, he would get me straightened out.”
It was his grandfather that introduced young Percy to golf when he was a 3-year-old by taking him to the Allen County Country Club. Young Matt took to the game at first stroke.
Percy has qualified for state both as a freshman and as a sophomore. He finished 12th in 3A as a freshman.
His golfing career continues to improve, cementing his bond with his grandfather, even through illness.
Glenn Percy was diagnosed with leukemia two years ago, making it tough for him to attend his grandson’s golf tournaments, the newspaper reported. Glenn was unable to watch Matt compete at the state tournament.
“He is a little weak, but he is getting better,” Matt told the Graphic. “He’s been active for so many years, but it’s tough on him because he can’t do much right now.”
Matthew Glenn Percy is the son of Mark Percy of Iola and Lynn Percy of Ottawa. His mother also teaches at Central Heights. He is the grandson of Glenn and Jeanne Anne Percy.
