COFFEYVILLE — Fair is fair.
Coffeyville Community College’s Red Raven women posted their first Jayhawk Eastern Division win when they beat Allen County Community College’s Red Devils 60-45 on the Red Devils’ court Jan. 14. A month and a day later, the Red Devils took a little revenge.
Allen County stretched its winning streak to four games Wednesday with an 87-84 win over host Coffeyville. Both teams are battling for a spot — and possible home game — in the Region VI, Division I playoffs and were tied at 5-5 in region play.
The Red Devils overcame a seven-point halftime deficit to win Wednesday. They outscored the Red Ravens 47-37 in the second half.
In order to do that, the Red Devils hit eight three-pointers in the second half. They were 11 of 31, 35.5 percent, from long range for the game. Allen County shot 41.5 percent, 27 of 65, from the field overall.
Freshman guard Miracle Davis had a triple-double for the Red Devils with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Sophomore Rackell Goldson drained five threes, sank 12 of 14 free throw attempts on her way to a career-high 33 points. She also had nine rebounds.
“We were down by as many as 14 points in the second half but once again our girls just continued to battle,” said Mark James, ACCC head coach.
“We had a key steal by Miracle and two huge free throws by Rackell to seal the win in the closing seconds.”
Allen County cashed in 22 of 30 free throw tosses while Coffeyville was 15 of 22 from the free-throw line. The Red Ravens shot 54 percent, 33 of 61, from the field.
Brittney Redmond, a freshman, drilled three treys as she put in 12 points for ACCC.
James said Coffeyville had a last-second attempt at the basket that fell short as time expired.
“Miracle was truly unstoppable at times on her way to her second triple-double of the season,” James said. “It seemed like every time we needed a bucket either Miracle or Rackell got it done.”
Allen County breached the 10-win mark on Saturday at home for the first time since 2008 when the ACCC women went 12-19 for the season under former head coach Aaron Kallhoff.
The Red Devils improved to 11-14 overall and 6-7 in Jayhawk East play. They stand at 6-5 in Region VI, Division I games in pursuit of the top four spots in the eastern division of the region.
“Tonight’s win puts us in sole possession of third for regional tournament seeding. However, we still have three very tough region games ahead of us,” James said.
