NEODESHA — Yates Center High’s Wildcats ran into a Girard buzzsaw Friday evening.

The undefeated and top-ranked Class 3A Trojan squad took an early lead and was never threatened, defeating Yates Center 57-33 in the championship game of the Wilson County Classic.

The defeat drops the Wildcats’ record to 10-2 on the season. Girard improves to 10-0.

The Trojans led 13-9 after one quarter before taking control in the second and third periods. Girard’s lead stood at 24-15 at the break and 40-23 by the end of the third quarter.

Individual statistics were unavailable.

In girls action, Yates Center fell in the fifth-place game Thursday to Cherryvale, 47-42.

The Chargers used a flood of free throws, going 23 of 36, to seal the win.

Yates Center kept things interesting courtesy of the torrid shooting from Madelynn Collins down the stretch. The 5-6 junior hit three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, scoring 13 of 15 points in period. Alas, Cherryvale hit 12 of 21 charities in the fourth quarter to stay in front.

Taylor Jacobs added 10 points for Yates Center.

The Wildcat squads are home Tuesday to host Pleasanton.
