Freshmen lead Mustang golf team to fourth-place finish

PITTSBURG — Tuesday was a nice day to be on the golf course. Iola High’s Mustangs thought so too and played like it.

Iola High freshman Shane Walden and two other competitors had the best day on Pittsburg’s  Crestwood Country Club golf course. 

Walden finished in second place with even rounds of 39 for is 78.

Logan Taylor also shot a 78 but was the top medalist leading Independence to the team championship at the Pittsburg High Invitational. Andrew Joy of Pittsburg shot a 78 and was third.

Iola freshman Kaden Macha and five others carded an 81. Macha had rounds of 42 and 39 and just missed a top-10 medal. He was 11th.

Then came the seniors for the Mustangs. Zach Crawford fired an 89 (48-41) for a tie for 27th. Kris Collins came in with a 92 (46-46) in a tie for 33rd and Doug Stewart shot a 93 (46-47).

Drake Dieker, Iola’s third freshman on the varsity, finished with a 94 (48-46).

Iola ended up fourth in the tournament with a 340. Independence took the team title with a 325.

Coffeyville was second with a 336 and Pittsburg’s St. Mary’s-Colgan High was third a 338.

 Columbus and Parson each had a 348 followed by Fort Scott at 352, Pittsburg and Labette County at 353, Chanute at 359 and Girard at 433.

Iola plays today at Parsons.
