GARNETT — Iola High’s freshmen girls basketball team played two different games on Monday, losing close and winning big.
“All of the coaches are very proud of these freshmen,” coach Chris Weide said. “They come to practice every day and they are ready to go to work. They are an unselfish group of girls that have been playing really well as a team.”
Opening up the night, the Fillies took on Anderson County in a 30-23 loss. Trailing 12-7 at the half, the teams traded baskets much of the second half.
Carly Cescon drove the right baseline with 2:30 left in the third quarter for a layup and the Fillies’ first score of the quarter. Anderson County answered on its next possession.
Cescon then repeated the baseline-layup, but on the left side of the court. Again, Anderson County answered right away. With 10 seconds left in the quarter, Chloe Gardner hit a deep jumper. Iola cut the lead to 16-13 heading into the final six -minute quarter.
Iola’s Colbi Riley started the quarter by driving to the basket through the lane. She made the layup and was fouled. She didn’t complete the traditional 3-pointer, but did pull the Fillies to within one point at 16-15.
The Bulldogs then pulled away with three straight baskets for a 6-0 run and 22-15 lead. Iola could only close the gap to within five-points at 24-19, when Cecson drove the lane for a one-handed layup right under the basket. The Bulldogs kept hitting free throws though, leading to a 30-23 win.
Cecson led the Fillies with seven points, while Riley followed with six. Gardner and Karly McGuffin each scored four points. Kate Bauer added two.
In Iola’s second contest against Osawatomie, it was a different game. The Fillies cruised to a 30-6 win, controlling the entire time.
Riley led the team with eight points, Gardner added five. Bauer and Madison Gambill each scored four points. Olivia Taylor and Macayla Bycroft both added three points. McGuffin made a basket, while Cecson made a free throw.
