Four Mat Warriors advance

PITTSBURG — Allen County Kids Wrestling Club has four wrestlers qualified for the 2012 Kansas Kids District 1 Championships this coming weekend.

Last Saturday at the District 1, South sub-district tournament held at Pittsburg State’s Weede Gym, four Mat Warriors placed in the top four of their weight classes.

Stephen McDonald claimed first in the high school division at 220 pounds. After a first-round bye, McDonald defeated Tanner Foulk of Osawatomie 7-3 to reach the championship match.

McDonald trailed Gershom Avalos of Pittsburg 7-5 in the second period. McDonald scored on a takedown and pinned Avalos at the 2:35 mark of the match.

Seth Sanford took second in the 12-and-under 190-pound class. He pinned Landry Brewton of Blue Valley in 51 seconds then defaulted to Blayne Rios of Paola because of illness.

T.J. Taylor went 2-2 in the 8-and-under 46-pound bracket for third place. He was pinned by Bryer Glaser of Parsons in 2 minutes, 51 seconds then came back to beat Danny Farley of Gardner-Edgerton with a major decision, 11-3.

Taylor was pinned by Cael Alderman of Olathe Southside Falcons in 2:18. Taylor earned third with a pin of Tucker Humble of Jr. Grizzlies in 1:29.

Andrew Garber finished fourth in the 14-and-under 155-pound division. He lost 19-2 in a technical fall to Alex Son of SEK Jr. Comets and rebounded with a pin of Ethan Stahl of Linn County Twisters in 2:46.

Garber lost 4-0 to Pearce Kinzer of Olathe Southside Falcons. He was pinned by Caleb Volkman of Spring Hill in 2:06.

McDonald, Sanford, Taylor and Garber head to Olathe East High School for the District I championships Saturday. The top four in each weight bracket advance to the 2012 Kansas Kids State Wrestling Tournament in Topeka, March 24-25.

Other Mat Warriors who wrestled at Saturday’s sub-district tournament were:

C.J. Shields was fifth in the 8-and-under 67-pound bracket going 1-2. Shields won the fifth-place match 10-4 over Mike Pualy of St. Thomas Aquinas.

Trenton Jones went 0-2 in the 8-and-under 95-pound class.

Jeremy Ridge finished sixth in the 10-and-under 70-pound bracket. He went 1-3 on the day. His win was a 2-0 decision over Michael Tujague of East Kansas in the quarterfinals. The two met again in the fifth-place match and Tujague won 2-0 over Ridge.

Tristan Sigfusson was fifth in the high school 120-pound division at 0-4. Cody Conner was sixth in the 145-pound class in the high school division at 1-3 and Zeph Larney went 0-2 in the same weight bracket.
