Saturday and Sunday people can fish in Kansas waters without a fishing license. It is the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks annual free-fishing weekend.
It is a great opportunity to get out and take the kids fishing or to get someone interested in a new pastime.
Some city lakes still require a daily use permit such as the Yates Center City Lakes, so check signs before starting to fish, said Ben Womelsdorf, local KDWP natural resource officer.
Recently Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback proclaimed June as “Great Outdoors Month.” Brownback encouraged Kansans to get out and have a fun summer.
Brownback declared June 12 as Great Outdoors Day in Kansas.
Excluding this weekend, non-residents and those 16-64 are required to purchase a fishing license before fishing in Kansas lakes, rivers and streams.
There are 25 state parks, five nature centers, more than 40 state fishing lakes and numerous wildlife areas for Kansans to enjoy and explore.
