FORT SCOTT — Iola High’s Fillies opened the 2012 tennis season Monday in junior varsity action.
Today, the varsity Fillies’ tennis players are at Chanute taking on Labette County, Columbus, Neodesha and Chanute to begin the season.
“With only four practices, I was happy with the girls and how they played,” said Jennifer Bycroft, Fillies’ tennis coach, of the junior varsity action Monday. “It was encouraging to pull out a couple of wins and almost won a tie break.”
Sophomore Khrystal Smith played No. 1 singles for Iola Monday. She lost 6-1 to Katie Phalen of Pittsburg and dropped 6-0 decisions to Fort Scott’s Krista Hightower and Independence’s KasiDee Cox.
Freshman Bobbi Sinclair was Iola’s No. 2 singles player and went 1-2. She beat Fort Scott’s Kristian Engle 6-2. Sinclair lost 6-0 to Pittsburg’s Emilee Curlee and to Independence’s Calissa Papen.
In No. 1 doubles action, junior Alexis Hobbs and freshman Chyanne Vaughn defeated Duff and Davis of Fort Scott 6-3. Hobbs and Vaughn lost 6-0 to Pittsburg’s Sullivan and Cicero and lost 6-3 to McCollam and Mejia of Independence.
Sophomore Baleigh Seeber and freshman Allyson Hobbs lost a heartbreaker in a tiebreaker. They dropped 6-5 to Fort Scott’s Hutchison and Reeves in No. 2 doubles action.
Seeber and Hobbs lost 6-0 to Hicks and McQuarie of Pittsburg. They lost 6-2 to Capps and Bryant of Independence.
“We have lots to work on but it was a good first performance. The girls had some exciting points last night and played well at the net,” Bycroft said.
