Fillies’ JV finishes fifth at Independence

INDEPENDENCE — Iola High’s junior varsity captured fifth place in the Independence High JV Invitational Saturday.

The Fillies beat Columbus 25-14, 25-6 in the fifth-place match. Karlie Lower was 16-of-16 serving with seven ace serves.

Iola was up 9-6 in the second set when Lower stepped to the serving line. She served 16 straight points  to give the set and match to Iola.

Chanel Coyne had three ace serves and one kill against Columbus. Hannah Endicott had two ace serves while Mackenzie Weseloh, Alyssa Zimmerman and Katie Thompson each had one ace.

Thompson put down four kills and made a solo block. Weseloh had five set assists. Paige Miller had two digs.

In pool play, Neodesha beat Iola 25-27, 25-23, 15-6. Thompson had three kills, one solo block and an ace serve. Zimmerman delivered five kills and served three aces. Coyne had a solo block and two kills. Weseloh was credited with nine assists and served two aces.

Miller and Halie Cleaver each had three digs. Thompson had five digs.

Iola defeated Fort Scot 25-23, 23-25, 15-8. Coyne racked up six kill, one solo block and one assisted block at the net. Coyne had an ace serve.

Thompson and Endicott each had five kills and Zimmerman had four kills. Thompson made three solo blocks and Lower had an assisted block.

Thompson served two aces while Endicott and Lower each had one ace serve. Weseloh had 13 set assists.
