Iola High’s freshmen captured third place at the IHS Freshman/C-Team Invitational volleyball tournament Saturday.
The Fillies beat Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcats 24-26, 25-17, 15-11 in the third-place match.
“Due to some injuries, I really want to thank Karlie Lower and Paige Miller for stepping in and helping our team,” said Jeff Fehr, IHS assistant coach. “These girls have learned about what it takes to come together and play as a unit.”
The Fillies opened with a 25-12, 25-17 loss to Burlington then split with Marmaton Valley losing the first set 25-16 but winning the second set 25-20.
Iola got past Uniontown 25-22, 26-24. The Fillies lost 25-6, 25-17 to Paola.
“The girls faced two really superior teams in Paola and Burlington and hung with them despite what the scores show,” Fehr said.
He said Emma Piazza, Miller and Lower were the top servers on the day for the Fillies. Lower led the team in set assists.
Leading the Fillies in kills were Shelby Smith, Torrie Lewis, Addie Haar and Katie Shields.
The IHS freshmen go to Fort Scott tonight.
Uniontown split with Marmaton Valley, losing 25-21 and winning 25-21. Tyeesha Perry served for eight points for the Eagles. Aubri Manbeck had two kills.
Against Iola, the Eagles got six service points from Jana Wilkinson. Perry and Manbeck each had three kills.
Burlington beat Uniontown 25-21, 25-11. Aleah Sutterby served up seven points and Perry had two  kills.
Paola defeated Uniontown 25-16, 25-8. Michaela Nietfeld served up eight points.
“Our girls were in every match but just couldn’t seem to finish off to get the win,” said Jackie Hall, UHS head coach. “They worked hard and ran our offense.”
