Fillies win meet

ALTAMONT  — It was no April Fools for Iola High’s Fillies as they opened the 2011 track season Friday.
Winning four events and scoring points in 11 of the 18 events boosted the Fillies to a team championship of the varsity division at the Labette County High Invitational track meet. Iola scored 1011⁄2 points with Girard in a distant second place with 87 points.
Fredonia was third with 86 and Chanute placed fourth with 83 points in the 10-team event.
“We are very strong in some events and non-existent in others,” said Marvin Smith, Iola High head track coach.
The Fillies won two medals in the pole vault led by Maggie Wilson going 11 feet for first place. Breanna Stout was third at 7 feet, 6 inches. Katlyn Cleaver won the discus with a throw of 99’11”.
Kelsey Larson ran the 400-meter dash in 63.7 seconds, claiming a gold medal.
Kendra Taiclet earned a silver medal in the 100-meter high hurdles but did it in IHS school-record time. Taiclet set a new Fillies’ mark in run the race in 15.9 seconds which was faster than Nicole Campbell’s record of 16.1 seconds in 1999.
Wilson, Taiclet, Larson and Chanel Coyne posted a runaway time of 53.3 seconds to take the gold medal in the 4×100-meter relay race. Wilson and Taiclet went 2-3 in the 100-meter dash in 13.1 seconds and 13.2 seconds, respectively.
Larson took the silver medal in the 200 meters in 27.6 seconds and Wilson was sixth. Taiclet ran second in the 300-meter low hurdles in 50.8 seconds.
Molly Maxwell was fourth in the 100-meter high hurdles in 17.4 seconds and fourth in the high jump at 4’10”. Larson finished fifth in the high jump at 4’10” while Stout ended up in a tie for sixth at 4’8”.
Cleaver placed fourth in the shot put with a toss of 30’6”. The foursome of Sydney Owens, Jamie Spears, Abby Works and Kristen Linn took fourth in the 4×800-meter relay race in 12 minutes, 41 seconds.
Iola’s junior varsity girls scored 22 points to finish eighth in their division at the meet. Chanute won the junior varsity team title with 123 points.
Coyne won the junior varsity pole vault, clearing seven feet. Darci Collins, despite the throwing ring flooded with rain water, won the shot put by almost two feet with a throw of 28’41⁄2”.
The JV Fillies’ 4×400-meter relay team of Coyne, Owens, Stout and Works was fifth in 5:00.6.
Iola’s varsity goes to Paola this Friday with events starting at 4 p.m. The junior varsity’s next meet is April 11 at Chanute.
