LA CYGNE — Iola High’s varsity volleyball team started the season with a fourth-place finish in Prairie View’s Invitational tournament Saturday.
“There were a lot of good things this weekend, but definitely room for improvement in some areas,” coach Emily Sigg said.
The Fillies beat Burlington in the first match, 25-19 and 25-16. The team had 28 kills spread out amongst everyone.
Emery Driskel led the way with eight kills, followed by Kyra Moore with six, Addie Haar with five, Ashlie Shields with four, Emma Piazza with three and Mikaela Platt with two.
Moore had 19 assists while Piazza added 14.
Iola lost its next match, 25-21 and 25-10, to Waverly. Moore led the team with 14 assists.
Driskel had eight kills. The Fillies had 17 kills as a team.
The Fillies came back in the next match against Central Heights, winning 25-15 and 25-12. Haar had five ace serves, while the team had nine total.
Driskel continued to be a menace with 10 kills. Moore had 24 assists, while Piazza had 12.
Iola lost to eventual champion Wellsville in three sets. The Fillies took the first set, 25-21, and then lost 25-19 and 25-15.
Shields led the team with seven kills. Moore had an impressive 29 assists. Piazza had five kills to go along with 14 assists.
Iola lost its final match of the day, 25-19 and 25-22, to Rossville. Moore racked up 31 assists and Driskel led the team with eight kills.
“Emery continued to be a force at the net,” Sigg said. “Kyra and Emma are the soul of the team as our setters, who have also become great hitters and excellent passers.”
Sigg added that Haar and Shields have showed improvement in their net play. Also, Toni Macha played libero, a new position for her this year and she stepped right in this weekend, Sigg said.
The Fillies next host their own invitational tournament at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
