GARNETT — The Iola High School volleyball team lost in three sets to Anderson County during the 4A Division II Sub-State Tournament on Saturday (25-14, 25-14).
The Fillies (4-28) entered postseason play as the No. 4 seed in a bracket of four teams, which left them paired up with No. 1 seed and host Anderson County (29-8). The Bulldogs went on to defeat Parsons in the title round and finished the tournament as champions.
But Iola was able to put up a fight against the eventual sub-state winners.
In each of their two sets, the Fillies jumped out to early leads. In the first set, coach Emily Sigg’s team had an 8-4 lead. In the second, Iola had a 5-0 lead.
But each time, the Bulldogs charged back, going on a 21-6 run in the first set and a 25-9 run in the second.
Ashlie Shields led the team with five kills Saturday. Piper Moore had a team-high five assists. Shields, Sydney Wade and Toni Macha each had two digs.
Macha had the squad’s only service ace on the day.
The Fillies end their season with just four wins, but they showed promise and potential for the future during their matchup Saturday.
“I was happy with how we went out and competed,” Sigg said. “We pushed Anderson County in the start of both games and really played our hearts out. These girls have been such a blessing to coach this season and I can’t speak highly enough about each and every one of them. We didn’t have the most wins we’ve ever had, but I still consider this a successful season.”
