Fillies tumble in overtime to Blue Comets, take fourth

LOUISBURG – What more could they have done.
“They (Chanute) hit quite a shot to send it into overtime. We were in her face and she put up a guarded three-pointer off one foot,” said Becky Carlson, Iola High Fillies’ head coach.
She is Chanute High’s Brenna Olson, whose three tied Friday’s third-place game in the 2011 Bulldog/Wildcat Classic at Louisburg. The teams were deadlocked 44-44.
The Blue Comets outscored the Fillies 6-3 in the overtime period, securing a 50-47 win. Also they took third place.
“It was a good game. We did a good job handling their pressure early. We didn’t have a lot of trouble against their press,” Carlson said.
“We missed some easy shots. But overall it was a hard fought game by both teams.”
Iola is now 2-2 overall. The Fillies went 1-2 in the tournament, finishing fourth. They were fifth last year.
Iola etched out a 13-12 first-quarter lead and was up 25-22 at halftime. The Fillies maintained a lead through the end of the third quarter, 34-28.
Chanute was able to rally back. The Blue Comets outscored the Fillies 16-10 in the final eight minutes of regulation.
“I’m proud of the girls. They played hard and that’s what we want,” Carlson said.
Kelsey Larson and Kendra Taiclet each recorded double-doubles in the game. Taiclet had 18 points and 14 rebounds while Larson tossed in 15 points and controlled 11 rebounds.
Larson dished out seven assists. Taiclet and Lauren Toney each had four assists. Larson made three steals.
Iola was 16 of 21 at the free-throw line. Chanute went 9 of 23 at the line.
Brenna Olson and Bailey Erikson each had 14 points for Chanute. Morgan Olson added 10.
Iola stays on the road for its final two games before Christmas break. The Fillies go to Parsons Tuesday then to Independence Friday.
