Fillies tie for fourth

PAOLA — Two photo finishes in races Friday at the Paola High Invitational track meet involved Iola High’s Fillies.
Kelsey Larson lost by .02 seconds in a photo finish in the 400-meter dash. Larson claimed the silver medal in 61.8 seconds losing at the finish line to a Paola runner.
Later in the 300-meter low hurdles, Kendra Taiclet was involved in a four-runner photo finish. Taiclet ended up fourth in 50.64 seconds as the third-place runner’s time was 50.63. Fifth place was 50.65 and sixth was 50.67 seconds.
“It was a tough meet. We had some events with near misses — the photo finishes, shot put and discus,” said Marvin Smith, Iola High head track coach, “but we had marked improvements over our first meet.”
Paola won the meet’s team title with 109 points followed by Pittsburg with 92 points. Louisburg finished third with 89 points. Iola and Lansing each scored 73 points.
Maggie Wilson won the pole vault with a height of 10 feet and teammate Breanna Stout was fifth at 7 feet. Molly Maxwell cleared a personal-best 5 feet in taking third in the high jump and Stout was seventh, clearing 4’8”.
Katlyn Cleaver captured the silver medal in the discus with a throw of 106’0”. Kirstin McGuffin was the silver medalist in the javelin with a toss of 106’4” and Ty Ellis was fifth at 92’11”.
In the 100-meter high hurdles, Taiclet ran second in 16.3 seconds and Maxwell was seventh in 17.7 seconds. Wilson finished fourth in the 100-meter dash in 13.1 seconds with Taiclet taking sixth in 13.5 seconds.
Larson took fifth in the 200-meter dash in 27.8 seconds. She combined with Wilson, Taiclet and Chanel Coyne for fourth place in the 4×100-meter relay race in 52.7 seconds.
The Fillies compete in the Independence track meet this Friday. Iola’s junior varsity track team is at Chanute today.
