Iola High’s girls tennis team hosted Independence, Parsons and Columbus in the team’s only home match of the season Thursday. Iola came in third of the four teams.
“I was disappointed with our third-place win,” coach Jenn Bycroft said. “I know we could’ve finished better than that. We made a lot of silly mistakes, such as hitting the ball right back to our opponent, not anticipating the ball and playing serves that were too long.
“We have a lot to work on this week, so hopefully we can improve on some of these things.”
One-seeded Bobbi Sinclair beat Columbus 8-0 in her first match. Independence’s Halei Matthews got the best of Sinclair, beating her 8-1. Sinclair finished strong beating Parsons’ Abbie Ford 8-3.
“Bobbi is getting smarter with her shots,” Bycroft said. “She is really doing a nice job of strategizing and ball placement.”
Chyanne Vaughn, two-seed, also beat Columbus 8-0. Independence’s Alex Keller got to her, winning 8-0. Vaughn then lost a hard- fought match to Parsons’ Emily Gatewood 8-5.
For the one-seed doubles team of Shelby Reno and Allyson Hobbs, the duo picked up one win. The team beat Columbus 8-2, before two losses. Independence beat them 8-3 and Parsons won 8-4.
Baleigh Seeber and Tori Smith also beat Columbus, winning 8-4. The team then lost to Independence 8-1 and Parsons 8-5.
“Baleigh did a great job tonight,” Bycroft said. “She ran down every ball and never gave up her hustle.”
Iola plays Thursday at Independence.
