CHANUTE — Iola High’s tennis team switched things around for Thursday’s matches at Chanute High School.
Jasmine Bannister and Hallie Wolf played No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, for the first time.
“Jasmine hustled well and her backhand really improved throughout the night,” said Jennifer Bycroft, Iola girls’ tennis coach.
“Hallie played tough and had some nice shots and good placements of the ball.”
Wolf went 2-2 at No. 2 doubles, beating Tayita Abudu 8-1 of Coffeyville and Ashley Simpson of Columbus 8-4. She lost 8-0 to Pittsburg’s Chapril Stewart and 8-3 to Chanute’s Carylyn Ward.
Bannister lost 8-6 to Jordan Hays of Coffeyville and to Shaylle Thomas of Columbus. She dropped an 8-0 decision to Ashton Born of Pittsburg and lost 8-1 to Czarina Ramos of Chanute.
Also playing as doubles teams for the first time were Dannette Newland and Autumn Snesrud and Nina Froggatte and Audrey Payne. Bycroft said the outcome doesn’t show it but all the girls played well.
In No. 1 doubles, Newland and Snesrud beat Columbus’s Kelsey Hill and Ryleigh Schoech 8-1. They lost 8-1 to Holeman and Honas of Coffeyville, 8-3 to Sammi Highfield and Kacey Sinclair of Pittsburg and 8-2 to Jade Gardner and Madison Wendt of Chanute.
Froggatte and Payne played in No. 2 doubles for Iola. They lost 8-2 to Gillman and Smith of Coffeyville, 8-0 to Robin Brummitt and Rashelle Hill of Pittsburg and 8-7 (9-7) to Columbus’s Alyssa Goodwin and Breana Mogle. They also dropped an 8-1 decision to Jeana Lawrence and Jessica Tucker of Chanute.
“The entire team has different things they need to work on,” Bycroft said. “I felt the girls did really well at the net.”
Iola’s junior varsity tennis players go to Parsons Monday.
On Wednesday, the Fillies host Independence and Parsons in a make-up competition rained out here Sept. 2. The varsity then goes to Pittsburg next Thursday.
