HUMBOLDT — The regular season came to an end for Iola softball Thursday after getting swept by Wellsville at the Humboldt Sports Complex.

The Fillies fell to 6-11 after dropping 2-1 and 8-3 decisions to the Lady Eagles.

The Fillies have lost five straight.

“It was a frustrating day,” head coach Chris Weide said. “The girls hustled and worked hard but it just didn’t come together for us in either game.”

After Iola took an early 1-0 lead in game one, Wellsville put up two in the third to jump ahead by one.

The Fillies managed just four hits for the rest of the game.

“That’s been our m.o. pretty much all year,” Weide said. “We play solid defense and we pitch well, but we struggle to hit the ball. I’m not sure if it’s a confidence deal or what, but it seems like either we’re all hitting or no one is.”

Freshman starter
Reece Murry threw a nice opener, allowing just two runs on four hits and two walks with 12 strikeouts.

Lauryn Holloway was the lone Fillies player with a multi-hit game, delivering a single and a double.

In game two, the squads were tied at 2-2 after three innings, before Wellsville took control.

Wellsville grabbed the lead with a run in the fifth and then piled on three in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Iola got its final run in the bottom of the seventh, but two straight pop-outs ended the game.

Paige Burrough, Kelsey Morrison, Nissa Fountain, Lauryn Holloway and Becca Sprague each had a hit in the game.

Sophomore Jenna Miller gave up eight runs (six earned) on nine hits and four walks with four strikeouts.

Since Thursday was the last home games of the season for the Fillies (even though they had to be played in Humboldt due to field conditions) Iola honored its four seniors: Mia Aronson, Burrough, Kendra Sprague and Madisyn Holloway and departing foreign exchange student and junior varsity team member Claudia Castellanos-Rodrigo.

“They’re great teammates and great leaders,” Weide said, “They come in every day and just give us such great effort which I think is incredible, partially because they all have so much going on and yet they’re able to be dedicated to each activity including softball. They’re definitely the main reason we don’t want it to end. We want to keep them around.”
