INDEPENDENCE — Iola High’s Fillies had a rough day on the tennis courts at Independence Thursday.
“It’s disappointing to come away with a second-place finish last week then turn around and not win any matches today,” said Jennifer Bycroft, Iola High girls’ tennis coach.
“Many silly mistakes were made. Footwork is key and we just didn’t have it tonight.”
Bycroft said Katana Smith worked hard, and while the outcome didn’t show it “Katana gave it her all.”
Katana Smith played as Iola’s No. 1 singles player. She lost 8-1 to Courtney Crain of Fort Scott, 8-0 to Abbi Groff of Independence, 8-0 to Megan Reed of Pittsburg and 8-2 to Czarina Ramos of Chanute.
In No. 2 singles, Abbey St. Clair was on the court for Iola. St. Clair dropped 8-0 decisions to Fort Scott’s Ashlyn Baugher and Ashlyn Conner and to Chanute’s Madison Wendt. Katy Short of Pittsburg beat St. Clair 8-1.
Megan Smith and Shyanne Hendry played No. 1 doubles and lost 8-1 to Fort Scott’s Michelle Buntain and Corina Harrison and to Pittsburg’s Brittney Wilde and Laikyn Long. The Iola duo lost 8-0 to Independence’s Kelsey Porter and Tyra Welch. They dropped an 8-3 decision to Chanute’s Breianna Brooks and Abby Lieudahl.
In No. 2 doubles action, Iola’s Hannah Barclay and Shelby Reno lost 8-0 to Fort Scott’s Kenna Savage and Haleigh Whitten, to Independence’s Caringtyn Julian and Sarah Derrick and to Pittsburg’s Jessica Curlee and Emily Baden. They lost 8-1 to Chanute’s Haley Akridge and Beth Ungles.
