Tuesday night was action-packed with area high school volleyball teams taking to the hardwood, including Iola, Humboldt, Marmaton Valley and Crest. Here is the rundown of each teams performance:
Iola
The Fillies mustered a split at Osawatomie, earning a loss against Santa Fe Trail, and a win over a talented Burlington team. Leading Iola in the match against Santa Fe Trail was Becca Sprague with five kills and three assists. Lauryn Holloway and Jenna Curry chipped in two kills each. Sprague propelled the attack in the win over the Wildcats, earning a team high six kills. Holloway and Jocelyn Erbert chipped in three kills apiece, and Holloway was a force at the net providing five blocks.
Humboldt
The Lady Cubs remain .500 in league play after going 1-1 on Tuesday. Humboldt lost in two sets against Eureka, but rebounded for a two-set win over Cherryvale. Alayna Johnson dictated the Lady Cub attack, providing a team high 16 assists, while sister Emma controlled the backline with 15 digs. Jessica Myers led with eight kills, and Kirstyn Murrow added six.
I thought we played much better tonight. We played as a team. We fought hard against a good Eureka team but could not pull it out, head coach Terry Meadows said. I thought our defense played well tonight and offense is starting to find the open court much better.
Crest
It was a great night for senior night in Colony, as the Lancers posted their best performance since losing senior Rylee Beckmon. After losing against Southeast-Cherokee 27-25 and 25-9, the Lady Lancers displayed a passionate performance in a win over Marmaton Valley.
The girls made a decision that they wanted it, head coach Abigail Hermreck said. They played hard, together, and communicated with each other. That is the best we have played since losing Riley, and the young girls stepped up and played better than their age.
Crest dominated all aspects of the game to win in two sets by scores of 25-19 and 25-13. It was a massive win for the Lady Lancers, who now believe they can be a sleeper team at regionals. Freshman McKenna Hammond was strong on the backline, earning seven digs, and serving 14/14 with three aces against the Wildcats. Lindsey Godderz also helped manage the back line by chipping in seven digs. Another freshman, Sydney Stephens, had a massive impact in the win over Marmaton Valley, providing six kills and two blocks along with a 100% serve rate.
We have to take it one point at a time, and have our girls swinging, Hermreck said. We have to stay aggressive and just go for it. We have nothing to lose because no one is expecting us to get out of regionals, and that is the best thing we have going for us.
Marmaton Valley
Last week, the Wildcats looked to have flipped a switch in their play, playing a tough match against Chetopa and earning a win over over Uniontown. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, Tuesday night was a step back. Marmaton Valley lost in two sets to Southeast-Cherokee (26-24 and 25-21), and were upset by Crest in two sets. Bailey Griffith was the best performer for the Wildcats, earning 11 kills and three blocks. Aly Ard complimented Griffiths efforts, adding four kills, and Kendall Scharf added another three.
Against Crest, we didnt play to our ability, head coach Terra Kegler said. We didnt show up, and didnt click. We were getting along as a team, but we didnt have a leader or the energy. I told the girl to stay together, and not let this one destroy them because we still have regionals.
