FREDONIA — Going 1-2-3 in the pole vault and winning six other events helped propel Iola High’s Fillies to a second-place finish at the 2011 Fredonia Relays last Thursday.
Iola High’s Mustangs gathered in 11 medals on a cold and rainy day. The Mustangs ended up third in their division in the meet hosted by Fredonia High School.
Chanute High swept the team championships. There were only five schools competing in the “large” school division.
The Blue Comet girls amassed 143 points and the Fillies scored 101. Girard was third with 42 points.
For the boys, Chanute scored 107 points for the title. Coffeyville scored 76 points while the Mustangs took third with 67 with Girard in fourth with 66 points.
“Ironically, our girls are at their best when we have 12 or so teams so it divides up the points in the events we do not enter. Our boys cannot handle the large number of schools because we have to scratch and claw for those fourth, fifth and sixth-place points,” said Marvin Smith, IHS head track coach.
Only the top five places in each event scored points at Fredonia.
“It was not a good day to have a track meet but the option was to cancel and not make up the meet. Our kids did a good job under the circumstances of cold and intermittent drizzle throughout the meet. We had a little over an hour delay to start the meet,” Smith said.
