Iola High’s Fillies found out Wednesday they are the No. 7 seed in Saturday’s 2010 Kansas Class 4A Substate Volleyball Tournament.
The Fillies and the other six area high school volleyball teams received substate brackets Wednesday. All substates are single-elimination tournaments.
Win and advance. The substate champions ad-vance to state tournaments Oct. 29-30 — Class 4A and 3A in Salina, Class 2A in Emporia and Class 1A in Hays.
Among the seven area schools, there is a No. 1 seed, a No. 2 seed, a No. 5 seed, two No. 7 seeds, a No. 8 seed and a No. 9 seed.
Iola is in the Class 4A substate tournament hosted by Louisburg High School. Play will be on two courts beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday.
The Fillies (8-24) play No. 2 seeded Spring Hill (24-14) at 2 p.m. Top-seeded Fort Scott (24-12) plays No. 8 Prairie View (0-31) at 2 p.m.
Louisburg (22-16) is third seeded and plays No. 6 Osawatomie (10-20). The winner plays the winner of Iola-Spring Hill in the semifinals.
Paola (15-17) is fourth seeded and plays fifth-seeded Anderson County (15-19). The winning team plays the winner of Fort Scott-Prairie View in the semifinals.
There is a change in admission prices for substate tournaments. The prices are set by the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
On Saturday it will cost $6 for adults and $5 for students (K-12) for the tournament. Tickets are good for the whole day of action. No passes will be accepted.
UNIONTOWN HIGH’S Eagles (32-5) received the top seed in the Kansas Class 3A Substate tournament hosted by Northeast High School in Arma. The Eagles won a Class 2A substate championship last year and played in the 2A state tournament.
This year the Eagles move up into 3A.
They take on Erie (5-29), which is seeded eighth, at 2 p.m. in Northeast High’s south gym.
Also in Uniontown’s side of the bracket, Frontenac (20-13) is fourth seeded and plays fifth-seeded Riverton (21-15).
Northeast (31-5) took the No. 2 seed and plays seventh-seeded Cherryvale (10-21) at 2 p.m. in the north gym. Third-seeded Southeast High-Cherokee (24-11) plays Galena (11-22), sixth seeded.
It could be set up for a showdown between the Eagles and NEH’s Lady Vikings in the championship match. Uniontown and Northeast split the two times the teams met this season.
IN CLASS 2A, Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs and Yates Center High’s Wildcats play each other in a play-in match. The 2A substate tournament hosted by Yates Center High has nine teams.
Humboldt (8-24) is eighth seeded and Yates Center (6-26) is ninth seeded. They play at 1 p.m. in Yates Center’s Norris Gym. The winner will play top-seeded Jayhawk-Linn (25-11) at 2 p.m.
Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcats (9-26) are seeded No. 7 and take on No. 2 West Elk (25-13) at 2 p.m.
The next matches on each court start 20 minutes following the conclusion of the first matches.
Oswego (13-22) is fourth seeded and Sedan (11-19) is fifth seeded. The winner plays the winner of Jayhawk-Linn-Humboldt-Yates Center. Pittsburg St. Mary’s-Colgan (12-19) is third seeded and plays sixth-seeded Madison (8-21). The winner plays winner of West Elk-Marmaton Valley.
KANSAS CLASS 1A is now in two divisions. In a Class 1A, Division 1 substate at St. Paul, Southern Coffey County High’s Lady Titans go after a second straight trip to the 1A state tournament.
The Lady Titans (20-15) is seeded No. 2 behind top-seeded Cedarvale/Dexter (27-8). Both teams received first-round byes in Saturday’s tournament.
Crest High’s Lady Lancers (12-21) are fifth seeded and play fourth-seeded Pleasanton (12-21) at 1 p.m. Saturday. The winner takes on Cedarvale/Dexter.
St. Paul, the host team, is third seeded at 15-14. The Indians play sixth-seeded Chetopa (2-32) in the second match of the tournament.
The winner of the St. Paul-Chetopa match plays Southern Coffey County in the semifinal.
