ALTAMONT — Weather conditions were unexpected for the Labette County High Invitational, the varsity-junior varsity track meet usually is contested in colder temperatures and wetter conditions. But not in 2012.

Iola High’s Mustangs and Fillies along with nine other schools competed in Friday’s track meet in hot, dry conditions.

The Fillies scored 70 points for third place in the varsity girls’ division. The points all were scored by four girls. The Mustang varsity finished fourth with 66 points.

Kendra Taiclet was a double gold-medal winner in the hurdle races for the Fillies. She won the 100-meter high hurdles in 16.5 seconds and turned in a first-place time of 50.0 seconds in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles.

Kelsey Larson placed second in the 400-meter dash in 1 minute, 2.5 seconds. She also pulled a silver medal in the javelin with a throw of 113 feet, 9 inches. Breanna Stout was the silver medalist in the pole vault, clearing 8 feet.

Ashley Campbell, a freshman, earned the bronze medal in the 100-meter dash in 13.1 seconds. Campbell, Larson and Taiclet went third, fourth and sixth, respectively, in the 200-meter dash. Campbell’s third-place time was 27.5 seconds, just ahead of Larson at 27.6 and Taiclet at 28.1 seconds.

Larson, Taiclet, Stout and Campbell combined to win the silver medal in the 4×100-meter relay race. Stout took fifth in the high jump, clearing the bar at 4’10”.

“We wanted to keep all of our freshmen in the junior varsity division but had to use Ashley just to fill out our relay, then she scores in two sprint races,” said Marvin Smith, Iola High head track coach.

Iola’s boys lone gold medal performance of the day came in the 4×800-meter relay race. Christian Kauth, Tyler Powelson, Tyler McIntosh and Jacob Harrison combined to win in 9:07.8.

Roman Yocham captured two silver medals in the distance races. Yocham was second in the 3200-meter run in 10:37.3 and second in the 1600-meter race in 4:50.2. Powelson took fifth in the 800-meter run in 2:12.7.

Mikal Bossell combined with Harrison, McIntosh and C. Kauth to take second in the 4×400-meter relay race in 3:42.2. Bossell placed fifth in the 200-meter dash in 23.7 seconds. Harrison was fifth in the 400-meter dash in 53.4, just ahead of Bossell also at 53.4 seconds.

“Excellent marks for Roman in both distance races for this early in the season. Jacob and Mikal turned in good times in the 400 but the SEK 400 is loaded,” Smith said. “Tyler Powelson had two good 800 races, but we were so far ahead in the 4×800 that our last two legs did not have to push their pace.”

Michael Wilson had the top performance in field events with third in the pole vault, clearing 10’6”. Justin Baker was fifth in the event at 9’6”. Stephen McDonald was the lone placer in the varsity throws with a sixth-place finish in the discus with a throw of 114’6”.

Adam Kauth’s third-place time of 43.2 seconds in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles tied him with Ethan Fulton in 10th place on the IHS honor roll for the event. A. Kauth also was third in the 110-meter high hurdles in 17.5 seconds.

Iola’s 4×100-meter relay team of A. Kauth, Fryendz Wallace, Harrison and Bossell placed fourth.
