ALTAMONT — Iola High’s Fillies were in the deep freeze and that’s not just from the cold winter-like temperatures of “opening day” Tuesday.
The Fillies managed just four hits and no runs against Labette County High’s Grizzlies in Southeast Kansas League softball play. The Grizzlies shut out the Fillies 12-0 in five innings and 15-0 in three innings.
“We had too many defensive errors. All evening we could not get that third out without a barrage of hits,” said Vince Coons, Fillies’ head coach.
“Our inexperience really showed through with our bats and our defensive play.”
Both teams battled the way below normal temperatures to open the 2011 softball season.
The Iola High and Labette County High baseball teams did not play Tuesday because of wet field conditions at Altamont.
In the first game, the Fillies got two singles from sophomore Libby Shay. Leah Weir, the lone senior on the Iola squad, had a double.
Junior Breail Thompson was Iola’s starting pitcher and went 4 innings. Weir pitched one inning.
Freshman Mackenzie Weseloh started the second game for Iola. She pitched 11⁄3 innings and Weir worked 12⁄3 innings.
“We played very stiff to start the night. We improved as the night went on and the girls battled hard all night,” Coons said.
“We’ll be ready for Coffeyville Thursday.”
Iola (0-2) hosts Coffeyville for a SEK doubleheader Thursday. First pitch is at 4:30 p.m. at Iola’s Riverside Park.
