NEODESHA — Iola High’s Fillies held a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning Friday, but they weren’t able to keep host Neodesha High’s Bluestreaks from scoring.
The Bluestreaks used four singles to produce two runs for a 4-3 victory.
“We should have had a win. Again, timely mistakes and opportunities not capitalized on hurt us,” said Vince Coons, Fillies’ head coach.
The Fillies dropped to 3-12 on the season. Today at Iola’s Riverside Park, the Fillies are back in Southeast Kansas League play hosting Columbus (2-4, 3-7). The Fillies are 2-8 in SEK action.
Iola scored twice in the first inning Friday. Leah Weir drew a leadoff walk and stole second base. Lauren Toney also walked. With two gone, Breail Thompson’s single drove in two runs.
Neodesha shaved the lead in half with a run in bottom of the first. The Bluestreaks tied the game with a run in the sixth.
“Breail was on with two gone in the sixth and Libby Shay hit the ball hard to center field. Neodesha’s fielder made a good catch,” Coons said.
In the seventh, with two out, Halie Cleaver reached on an error. Weir singled then Toney had a bunt single to produce the run.
B. Thompson took the pitching loss for Iola, giving up six hits, walking three and striking out seven. Thompson and Weir each had two singles.
Toney, Caitlyn Callaway and Cleaver each had a base hit.
