High School Softball: Lady Trojans 11, Fillies 6; Lady Trojans 21, Fillies 6
The Iola softball team progressed in some areas Tuesday night while being swept at Osawatomie.
The Fillies hit the ball better and played one decently clean game defensively but still made far too many errors losing game one 11-6 and game two 21-6.
Iola drops to 1-7 and 1-3 in Pioneer League play after the loss.
We keep digging ourselves in holes, head coach Chris Weide said. Were not making fundamental plays, were not communicating, were not in the right spots. And thats whats disappointing. When another team is better than you and they put it on you thats one thing but when you get blown out by a team that youre evenly matched with, thats unacceptable.
In game one, the Fillies were able to take the Lady Trojans to seven innings but six runs in the bottom of the second and five in the bottom of the fifth put Iola in an 11-2 hole.
And similar to the end of their home game versus Chanute, the seventh inning saw their bats awaken a bit as the Fillies put up three runs before Osawatomie managed to get the final out.
Freshman starter Kailey Schinstock went the full six innings, allowing 11 runs on nine hits and five walks with a strikeout. The Fillies committed only two errors in the ball game,
I was proud of them in those last couple of innings when they were putting the bat on the ball, Weide said. Its a confidence thing. Once someone gets a hit then it carries over to the next batter and so on. It was nice to see them string something together and it did carry over into the second game.
The Fillies homered twice in the game with one coming from Kelsi Morrison and the other from Nissa Fountain.
In game two, Iola took a brief 1-0 lead but the Lady Trojans responded in the bottom of the first with five runs.
The Fillies came out aggressively in response and scored four runs to tie it up at five in the top of the second.
While Iola was able to withstand the first Osawatomie assault, the second a nine-run bottom of the second proved too much.
The Lady Trojans piled on two more in the bottom of the third. The Fillies looked to possibly be weathering the storm with a run in the top of the fourth but five runs in the bottom of the fourth triggered the run-rule and ended the game.
We cant have a decent game of defense and not hit or a good hitting game and not pitch well, Weide said. Were not good enough to get away with only doing some things. We have to come out and do everything mentally well for us to get some wins.
Sophomore starter Sadrie Overall earned the loss allowing 21 runs (13 earned) on 20 hits and two walks. The Fillies committed six errors.
Iola will try to bounce back and snap a six-game losing streak on Thursday when they travel to Prairie View.
