GARNETT — There is hardly a sports cliche that doesn’t describe the Fillies’ 43-28 win over Anderson County on Friday night in Garnett.

The Bulldogs led the Fillies 24-19 at halftime, but in the second half, the Fillies “buckled down” and “focused on the little things” to “find a way to win.”

Despite only having two baskets in the second half — a putback by Della Lohman and a fast break layup by Sydney Wade — Iola outscored Anderson County 24-4 in the second half.

The offensive key to the second half was the terrific free throw shooting by the Fillies. Seniors Sydney Wade and Riley Murry were the leaders in that category.

Trailing 26-21 midway through the third quarter, Murry hit four straight foul shot and Wade added another one late in the quarter to tie the game at 26-26 heading into the fourth quarter.

Two more Murry free throws gave Iola the lead early in the period and the momentum continued as Iola ended up with an 18-0 run to make the lead 39-26, before Anderson County was able to finally score again and cruise to the 15-point victory.

Wade was the game’s leading scorer with 14 and made nine of her 12 free throw attempts.

Murry finished with eight points and converted all six of her free throws.

The win improves Iola’s record to 10-6 overall and 6-2 in conference play with their only two losses coming against Burlington.
