Iola High’s Fillies have secured the third seed and will take on Anderson County High for the third time in a week Saturday to open the Class 4A, Division II substate volleyball tournament.
The two squads split a doubleheader Tuesday in Iola’s home finale, with the Fillies coming from behind to win the opener in three sets, and Anderson County winning the second game in straight sets.
Iola brings a 14-20 record into Saturday’s match. Anderson County, the second seed, sports a 16-18 record.
Top seed Burlington (34-2) — the second ranked Class 4A team in the state — will take on fourth seed Parsons (8-22) in the opening match at 3 p.m. The Iola-Anderson County match will begin 20 minutes after the Burlington-Parsons match concludes.
In addition to its recent history with Burlington, Iola also has faced the powerful Wildcats on the court. In Iola’s invitational tournament in September, the Fillies won the opening set, and led at points in both the second and third, but came up just short of the victory.
Still, Iola coach Emily Sigg is optimistic.
“The girls have done a good job of improving this season,” she said. “If we can play our game, we can be competitive.”
The substate championship will follow the Iola-Anderson County match. The winner advances to the state tournament in Salina.
The state tournament in all classifications is Nov. 1 and 2.

HUMBOLDT HIGH’S Lady Cubs have parlayed a 24-9 record into the third seed at their Class 3A substate, hosted by Southeast High in Cherokee. Humboldt takes on sixth seed Riverton (12-20) after Jayhawk-Linn (32-4 and the second seed) faces seventh seed Galena (11-22) at 2 p.m.

The substate champion will head to Emporia for the state tournament.

YATES CENTER has the eighth seed at 7-26 and will take on top-seeded Uniontown (27-10) at the Class 2A substate in Pleasanton. The match begins at 2 p.m. in the north gymnasium. The winner advances to play either fourth seed Madison-Hamilton (14-15) or fifth seed Oswego (16-18). Second seed St. Mary’s Colgan (24-10) faces West Elk (7-22) on the other side of the bracket, with the winner advancing to face either third seed Sedan (17-16) or sixth seed Pleasanton (15-17).

Top seed Waverly (27-8) awaits the SCC-St. Paul winner. The Marmaton Valley-MdCV winner will take on second seed Lebo (22-11).
The substate champion will compete at the state tournament in Hays.

CREST HIGH is seeded fifth at 2-31 and will face fourth-seeded Elk Valley (2-25) at 2 p.m. Saturday at host Chetopa High School in the Class 1A, Division II substate. The winner gets to take on top seed Argonia (31-5) in the next match.
