High School Track and Field: Iola Mustangs and Fillies

The Iola track and field teams put in solid performances at the Fredonia Relays on Friday. Out of 21 teams, the Fillies finished third overall despite a depleted roster and the Mustangs finished eighth.

Junior Ellie Carson earned her first top-finish in the high hurdles with a time of 16.91. Carson also finished second in the 300-meter hurdles (54.17).

Sophomore Elysia Kunkler continued her dominance in the 100-meter dash, finishing first with a time of 12.98. She also finished second in the long jump with a distance of 16’3.5” and was disqualified after a false start in the high hurdles.

Sophomore Elka Billings turned in a season-best time of 2:38.50 in the 800 meters which was good for second.

“This was an outstanding race by Elka,” head coach Dana Daugharthy said. “She had just gotten done running the open 400, and she turns around and sets a season-best time. Elka is a workhorse and does not shy away from loading up on running events.”

Senior Kylee Maloney finished fifth in the long jump with a distance of 15’4.75”. The distance was a personal best.

Senior Nora Gostner finished sixth in the discus (89-10) and Madi Carlin placed sixth in the high jump with a jump of 4’08”, which was a season best and tied for a personal best.

The 4×400 relay team consisting of Maloney, Shelby, Billings and Kunkler finished second with a time of 4:34.52, a season-best time by one second. It was also Kunkler’s first time participating on that team.

FOR THE IOLA boys, sophomore Christian Floyd finished third in the discus with a throw of 119’10” and fourth in the shot put with a throw of 43’9.5” which was a personal best by three feet.

Freshman Jack Adams placed third in the 3200 with a time of 11:16 and Nathan Sprague finished sixth in the 800 meters (2:16.22).
