BURLINGTON — It had been at least four years since any Iola varsity track team finished first in a meet.

On Monday, the Fillies scored 95 team points to finish in first by 23 points. The Iola boys finished 10th.

The Fillies also continued their streak of finishing ahead of every Pioneer League team that they’ve gone up against this season.

Sophomore Elysia Kunkler continued her tear, finishing first in the 100 (13.36), high hurdles (16.13) and the 300-meter hurdles (51.34). She also finished second in the long jump with a distance of 16’6.75”.

Also finishing on top was the 4×100 relay team of Kassy Shelby, Nora Gostner, Ellie Carson and Madisyn Holloway who had a season-best time of 53.66. Head coach Dana Daugharthy said that considering the conditions on Monday, that type of finish was really impressive.

“This was a phenomenal time for us despite the wind,” Daugharthy said. “We had perfect hand-offs between all of our runners.”

Carson finished just a hair behind Kunkler in the high hurdles, earning second with a time of 16.17.

Shelby finished third in the 200 (29.30) and fourth in the 400 (1:05.43) and Gostner finished third in the 100 (14.00) and fifth in the 200 (29.99).

On the distance end, Elka Billings finished fourth in the 1600 with a time of 5:54.44 and sixth in the 800 with a time of 2:37.8. Billings ran the 800 right after the 1600 and had the misfortune of doing so directly into the wind.

Kylee Maloney finished fourth in the long jump with a distance of 15’4.25”. Monday was the third time this season that she’s jumped at least 15 feet.

The 4×400 relay team of Maloney, Holloway, Billings and Gardner finished sixth with a time of 4:45.79.

Madi Carlin finished seventh in the high jump with a distance of 4’08”.

FOR THE BOYS, Christian Floyd finally broke through in the shot put after weeks of top-five finishes. He finished first with a distance of 43’07”.

He also finished seventh in the discus with a throw of 113’08”.

Kanyon Beasley finished just ahead of him with a fifth-place discus finish with a throw of 146’06.5”.
