Fillies fall at home

Iola High’s Fillies hit the ball Tuesday at home against Independence High’s Lady Bulldogs. The problem was being able to outscore Independence.

Iola scored five runs in the first inning of the first game. The Fillies had a 5-1 lead before the Lady Bulldogs ripped it away with a six-run second inning. Iola did not score again until the bottom of the seventh inning.

The damage had been done. Independence won 15-6. Breail Thompson took the pitching loss for Iola, giving up 16 hits and one walk. Thompson struck out five batters.

Iola delivered nine hits in the game. Lauren Toney connected for two singles and a triple for the Fillies and Caitlin Callaway had two singles. B. Thompson had a single and a double. Mackenzie Weseloh doubled and Libby Shay singled.

The Fillies produced 12 hits and 13 runs in the second game. It wasn’t enough. The Lady Bulldogs wiped out an 11-8 Iola lead with six runs in the sixth inning and four more in the seventh.

Iola tried a seventh-inning rally but only plated two and lost 18-13.

Weseloh was the Iola starting pitcher. Hannah Endicott and Thompson saw duty on the mound. Independence had 13 hits and Iola pitchers issued eight walks.

Callaway cranked out a single and a double for Iola. Thompson, Toney and Weseloh each had two base hits. Hitting a single each were Holly Schomaker, Shay, Hallie Cleaver and Katie Shields.
