All three of Iola High’s volleyball teams (varsity, JV and freshman) were in action Tuesday night.
The varsity squad, coached by Emily Sigg, played two matches — losing one against Santa Fe Trail before earning a victory over Osawatomie.
In the Fillies two-set loss to the Chargers (25-20, 25-10), Ashlie Shields recorded a team-high five kills while freshman Piper Moore wasn’t too far behind with three kills of her own.
McKaylie Cleaver had seven assists in the loss as well.
But Iola recovered in time to defeat Osawatomie in two sets (25-21, 25-13).
Shields was once again the Fillies’ go-to option on offense with six kills. Sydney Wade and Mikaela Platt provided a boost as well by recording five kills each.
Cleaver added 10 more assists in the victory.
“We played so well as a team tonight,” Sigg said. “The girls showed much improvement in playing together as well being scrappier. They kept their attitudes positive the whole time, which in volleyball, makes a big difference in games. Even in the loss against Sante Fe Trail, we kept up and positive the whole time. They really earned the win against Osawatomie.”
Iola’s JV squad won both of its games against Santa Fe Trail and Osawatomie.
The Fillies defeated the Chargers but needed three sets to do so (25-13, 18-25, 15-7).
Colbi Riley led all players with seven aces.
Riley Murray, Karly McGuffin and Jayden Sigg each recorded three kills in the win.
The Fillies needed just two sets to put away the Trojans (26-24, 25-13).
Chloe Gardner had a team-high four aces. Murray led the Fillies with three kills.
As for the freshman team, Iola lost a closely fought battle against Santa Fe Trail in two sets (25-23, 25-19).
And in the second game of the night against Osawatomie, Iola’s freshmen once again remained competitive but fell in three sets (26-24, 15-25, 15-6).
Iola High’s volleyball program is back in action Thursday when it travels to Pittsburg.
