Iola High’s Fillies were overpowered by Labette County High’s Grizzlies Tuesday in the 2012 softball season opener.
Labette County’s Allie Reynolds allowed just two singles by the Fillies in the two Southeast Kansas League games. Reynolds threw a no-hit, shutout in the first game as the visiting Grizzlies won 13-0 in five innings.
The Grizzlies run-ruled the Fillies again, 14-0, in five innings with Reynolds on the mound. Iola did get on base in the second game but could not come up with the needed hit when runners were on to score runs.
Iola (0-2) travels to Coffeyville in SEK action Thursday for two games.
In the first game Tuesday, it was scoreless for two innings then the Grizzlies pushed across six runs in the third inning. They added three runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth.
Breail Thompson pitched for the Fillies and gave up eight hits, walked one, hit one batter and struck out two. Iola committed seven errors defensively.
Iola had just one base runner in the first game. Libby Shay drew a two-out walk in the fifth.
Reynolds struck out 12 of the 16 batters she faced in the game.
The Grizzlies, the defending SEK champions, scored four runs in the first inning of the second game. They had an eight-run second frame then added a single run in the third and again in the fifth.
Mackenzie Weseloh was Iola’s starting pitcher and Thompson came on in relief. Iola issued four walks in the game and allowed 12 hits. The Fillies made four defensive errors.
Thompson and Hannah Endicott each had a single for Iola. The Fillies left five runners on base.
